CAB Achievements                                                  BACK

Individuals are hired for two reasons:

  1. They can increase the bottom line.

  2. They can increase efficiency or decrease costs.

Prior to the interview, identify significant achievements from prior experience. You should develop Challenge, Action, and Benefit (CAB) statements. Each term is defined as:

Challenge Identify problems, opportunities, and challenges that you have faced which directly relate to the position you are seeking.

ActionWhat action did you take to solve the problem? The actions should show leadership, creativity, teamwork, and ingenuity.

Benefit The benefit will always be a positive outcome to the company by increasing efficiency, helping the company attain its objectives, or increasing the bottom line.

Ten to fifteen of these CAB statements should be developed covering all prior achievements. Some examples are shown on the CAB worksheet below, which deal with specific types of positions. You should develop these statements prior to the interview.

1. SAMPLE CAB (Engineer)

Worked with manufacturing management to eliminate duplication and redesigned work flow.

2. SAMPLE CAB (Distribution Manager)

CHALLENGE

ACTION BENEFIT

Decrease transportation costs by 12%.

 

- Formed a management team and renegotiated freight rates.
- Combined less than LTL loads into full loads.

Decreased transportation costs by 13%.

 

3. SAMPLE CAB (Project Manager, Commercial Construction)

CHALLENGE

ACTION BENEFIT

Bring $12 million office building in on time and budget.

 

Developed production trades scheduling which cut lead time from one segment to the next.

 

Building was completed ahead of schedule and under budget, enabling the company to realize a $100,000 early completion bonus.

4. SAMPLE CAB (Production Scheduling Manager)

CHALLENGE

ACTION BENEFIT

Increase throughput and production.

 

Rescheduled products for longer runs with less change over downtime.

 

Increased production utilization from 80% to 93% and increased order fulfillment from 88% to 96% resulting in a 5% gross margin increase for the company.

During the actual interview, you can cite specific examples of accomplishments based on the CAB statements you develop. This will qualify you in the interviewer’s eyes.
